Title Hologram prevents counterfeit goods – a new technology to protect brands
Writer Admin Date 2007-06-20 Hits 1638
A hologram is a three dimensional image printed on a surface similar to photographic film. It uses the interference effect of lights created when two laser lights collide. The unique characteristics of a hologram, such as its deep cubic image and special change of color, can not be copied easily. By printing a hologram on a product, customers can visually recognize that the product is genuine.

As recognition of Korean products is increasing in the world’s market, counterfeit goods imitating Korean products are found all around the world, not only in China or Southeast Asia but also in Japan, North America, Mid/South America, Australia, Middle East Asia and East Europe.

The development of color copying and computer scanning has also made counterfeiting easier., Companies can respond to systemized counterfeiting technologies using holograms, while increasing customer confidence in their products. If holograms can be used in trademarks, they can provide double protection against counterfeit goods.

Recently, the KIPO revised the Trademarks Law to protect holograms. This revision was made following the introduction of new trademark formats, such as holograms, in this society of high technology and advanced industry. The notice of legislation is taking place at this time to collect opinions and prepare necessary documents and procedures. The revised law will be enforced starting July 1, 2007. By reinforcing the connection between the trademarks system and the trading market, and by expanding the scope of trademark selection, company efforts to create added value through brands will be more active in the future.
